- In a saucepan, bring 1 cup of rice and 2 1/4 cups of water to a boil over high heat.
- Stir in salt and butter or margarine (both optional), reduce heat to medium-low, cover with tight-fitting lid and simmer for 20 - 25 minutes until water is absorbed without lifting the lid.
- Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff lightly with a fork before serving.
